Acclimation, expansion, and luxury vinyl flooring

Acclimation, expansion, and luxury vinyl flooring

Did you know that acclimation is necessary for luxury vinyl tile and plank, much as it is for hardwood? This is because these materials can expand and contract, which can cause issues you want to avoid.

The good news is that acclimation is a simple process for these materials. And we know you'll be better safe than sorry, as the saying goes.

What is acclimation?

Acclimation is the process of equalizing humidity between the flooring and the environment. Once you finish the process, materials aren't likely to take on damage.

The acclimation time frame

The acclimation period should last about 72 hours for luxury vinyl plank and tile. This time could be more or less, depending on the humidity in your home and the weather.

Once the process is complete, installation can carry on as usual. And with most materials, installation can take only a day or less.

What causes luxury vinyl to expand or contract?

These materials have tiny air pockets throughout the vinyl and other layers. Trapped air can fill those spaces, which leads to expansion and contracting.
